Nettie Rosenstein American, 1895-1980
Evening Dress and Lace Scarf , 1947
Silk taffeta, silk machine made lace
Feather-patterned black lace swirls dramatically from head to hem, set off by this dress’s brick-red taffeta. Unflaggingly inventive, Nettie Rosenstein designed by draping directly on the figure, and insisted on using the finest materials whatever the cost. Lace was a favorite fabric. Rosenstein’s influential and expensive fashions were noted for their architectural simplicity, reflecting her conviction, “ Its what you leave off the dress that makes it smart.”
